A tribute shared in Normandy and across the world

June 6 at 19:44 PMIn Normandy and far beyond, the bells ring in unison to pay homage to the liberators of France and Europe.

Initiated in 2020, when the D-Day commemorations took place without an audience, the Bell Towers of Liberty operation is now a long-term project and is being adopted in many territories in France and internationally.

The origins of the project

In 2020, in a context marked by the epidemic, the June 6 ceremonies could not be held as usual. Nicolas BelléeOne of the founders of the museum then imagined a simple and symbolic initiative: to ring the bells at a significant time, echoing June 1944. Through this gesture, the aim was to recreate a link between the territories and to keep the memory alive, despite the impossibility of gathering together.

An echo of the bells of Liberation

In the summer of 1944, the bells had rung to announce the LibérationThis sound, carrying joy and hope, remains deeply etched in our memories. The Bell Towers of Liberty operation continues this tradition, by ringing this signal again at a symbolic time: 19:44 pm.

An ever-widening mobilization

In 2024, more than 3,300 cities participated in this initiative in Normandy, France, and abroad, notably in the United States. This collective tribute was welcomed by many participants.

Tom Rice, a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division, particularly attached to the town of Carentan, participated in this tribute as early as 2020, by ringing the bells in the United States.

A moment of shared reflection

On June 6th at 19:44 pm, everyone is invited to pause, listen to the bells, and remember. A simple yet meaningful moment to pay tribute to those who contributed to the Liberation.
