Discover the exhibition "War on Display" at Normandy Victory Museum
From 4 April to 1 November 2026
Through a selection of seventy original posters, discover how images were used to influence public opinion, mobilise populations and spread the messages of political regimes between 1939 and 1945.
On display at Normandy Victory Museum until 1 November 2026, this exhibition, designed for all audiences, offers a historical, visual and human perspective on these striking documents.

Propaganda posters during the Second World War
Displayed in streets, railway stations and public places, propaganda posters were part of civilians’ daily lives during the Second World War.
They were used to encourage enlistment, support the war effort, portray the enemy as a threat and spread the messages of those in power. Through their visual impact and simple slogans, these images sought to leave a lasting impression and shape behaviour.
The exhibition “War on Display” invites visitors to rediscover these iconic documents and gain a better understanding of the role they played in countries at war.

One exhibition, three perspectives
Historical perspective
The posters on display retrace the political and military context of the period from 1939 to 1945. Four sections explore its major stages: the Phoney War, the Vichy regime, propaganda against designated enemies and the Liberation.
Through their themes, formats and commissioning bodies, they reflect the tensions, challenges and developments of the Second World War.
Graphic and artistic perspective
Beyond their political messages, these posters reveal a rich and carefully constructed visual language. Colours, typography, symbols and composition are used to capture attention, make the messages immediately understandable and leave a lasting impression.
Sociological perspective
These posters also provide insight into the persuasive techniques used during the Second World War to influence populations. They show how propaganda uses emotion, fear and hope to shape behaviour.

Objects and documents offering further insight
In addition to the posters loaned by Bruneval 42 – Histoire & Mémoire, Normandy Victory Museum presents a selection of objects and documents from its collections.
These items help place the posters in context and provide further insight into the conditions in which they were produced and distributed.
