In the heart of the lands scarred by the battles of the summer of 1944, the Normandy Victory Museum invites your group to discover a major, yet little-known, event of the Second World War: the Battle of the Hedgerows.
Through immersive scenography and meticulously recreated worlds, the visit takes participants on an emotional journey into the heart of the daily lives of soldiers and civilians during the 100 days following the Normandy landings.
Here, history is not just read on signs, it is experienced, felt, lived.
Visiting the museum
During this journey through history, your group will discover the events that took place in Normandy, surrounding the Battle of the Hedgerows. Following a chronological path, they will traverse several themed areas:
- 1940, the Occupation
- June 1944, the D-Day Landings
- Summer 1944, the Battle of the Hedgerows
- After the battle: liberation and reconstruction
Finally, there is an exhibition that highlights the role of women in the war.
Life-size sets, as close to reality as possible
Around thirty dioramas immerse the visitor in Normandy in 1944. The mannequins, often hand-painted, are distinguished by their expressiveness, while each scene is constructed with an attention to historical detail validated by our historian.
Inspired by real situations, sometimes from archive photographs, these scenes recreate moments of life: battles, care, waiting, everyday scenes, with great accuracy.
Iconic vehicles at the heart of the route
Throughout the visit, several military and civilian vehicles complement the displays: Jeep Willys, Dodge, Half-Track, M8 Greyhound, or even a P47 Thunderbolt aircraft (full-size model).
The museum also houses a real landing craft, which visitors can enter to discover an exclusive testimony.
The presence of all these vehicles, in real scale, contributes to the immersion and gives full measure to the scale of the museum.
Testimonies, screenings and living memory
Throughout the journey, projection screens broadcast testimonies from soldiers and civilians, which place the objects and scenes in a profoundly human dimension.
A dedicated screening room welcomes visitors for the showing of a moving documentary, presented in a seated area with about twenty seats. This break offers a moment of reflection and quiet contemplation amidst a dense and immersive visit.
Many of these voices are those of men and women who were children in 1944, direct witnesses to the fighting and upheaval of the Liberation in Normandy. Their stories remind us that behind the uniforms and vehicles lie individual destinies, and that the history of the Battle of the Hedgerows is also the story of a population forever marked by the experience.
A temporary exhibition to discover in 2026
In addition to the permanent exhibition dedicated to the Battle of the Hedgerows, the Normandy Victory Museum presents from April 4th to November 1st the exhibition "War on Display", dedicated to propaganda posters of the Second World War.
