An encounter with a witness to the Battle of Normandy
On October 25, 2022, the Normandy Victory Museum welcomes Chester Pike “Buck” Sloan, a veteran of the 2nd Infantry Division, returning to Normandy 78 years after fighting there.
The program includes a presentation of his experiences during the Second World War, followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience. A rare opportunity to meet a direct witness to the Battle of Normandy.
Chester “Buck” Sloan’s journey during the war
Chester P. Sloan arrived in Normandy a few weeks after the landings, as reinforcements. He was assigned to Company B of the 38th Infantry Regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division, also known as the “Indian Head Division”.
He took part in the fighting for the liberation of Brest as a gunner with a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle), before being engaged in the Ardennes during the last major German offensive in Western Europe.
It was during this battle that he was wounded, when he was only 20 years old.
Decades later, at the age of 98, he returned to Normandy for the first time, speaking emotionally about his journey and his commitment.
