A look back at the commemorative festival Cobra 44 - 2024 Edition
During these two days and for the fourth edition of the festival COBRA 44, the Normandy Victory Museum commemorated the end of the Battle of the Hedgerows and took over its outdoor areas, with activities deployed across the entire site.
An edition that benefited from the enthusiasm for the 80th D-Day
The year 2024 attracted a particularly large audience to Normandy, from France and abroad. This momentum was felt during the festival. Cobra 44, with sustained attendance throughout the weekend.
In this context, the museum has offered an edition faithful to its identity: to allow a better understanding of what happened after June 6, 1944, when the fighting continued in the Norman bocage.
Operation "Living Museum": When scenes come to life
For two days, the museum's spaces and its grounds were taken over by reenactors. Camps, equipment, scenes of daily life: everything invited visitors to closely observe the daily lives of the soldiers involved in the Battle of the Hedgerows.
At regular intervals, some of them even took over the museum's historical scenes, which came to life before the surprised eyes of visitors.
A reenactment camp with a theme of 2nd Armored Division
This year, the reenactment camp was honoring the 2nd Armored Division American, engaged during Operation Cobra in July 1944, as well as German units, including the Fallschirmjäger.
Le Signal Corps presented different means of transmission, from radios to carrier pigeons used during the Second World War, while another group demonstrated the workings of a field kitchen.
Armored units, infantry and vintage vehicles completed the display, providing a concrete glimpse into the diversity of forces involved.
Conferences, book signings and meet-and-greets enjoyed by an enthusiastic audience
In addition to the activities offered on-site, conferences, book signings, and meet-and-greets also punctuated the weekend, allowing visitors to interact directly with authors and specialists of the Second World War. During this edition, they were able to meet, among others:
• Patrick Fissot, co-founder of the museum, who gave a lecture on the Battle of the Hedgerows, on the occasion of the release of his book, which is dedicated to himHe also accompanied visitors on a guided tour of the museum.
• Edmond Kern, specialist in the ENIGMA machine, who once again shared his knowledge during a dedicated conference, complemented by very well-attended demonstrations.
On the authors' side, several book signing sessions punctuated the weekend, notably with the presence of JB Djian, Tanguy Le Sant or Jay, allowing direct exchanges with the public around their works.
A weekend of sharing around history
This 2024 edition of the commemorative festival was a resounding success. It allowed visitors who were unable to attend the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings to enjoy cultural activities centered around history.
