Jeep vs. Dodge: two symbols of the Second World War on the roads of Normandy
We’re often asked if we offer Jeep tours. The answer is no for the Jeep, but for most of the year, we take visitors on a guided tour of history in a vintage DODGE WC51. So, what’s the difference between the Jeep and the Dodge, the two emblematic vehicles of the Second World War in Normandy?

Table of contents
Thousands of military vehicles passed through Normandy during the Second World War. Two of these iconic vehicles are the Jeep and Dodge, which played a vital role on the battlefields of Europe during this tumultuous period. There are many models, but we’ve concentrated on the best-known: the Jeep Willys and the DODGE WC.
The fundamental difference between the Jeep Willys MB and the Dodge WC lies in their primary use and design. The Jeep Willys MB was a light, versatile vehicle, well suited to reconnaissance and the transport of small, light loads. The Dodge WC, on the other hand, was designed for heavier logistical tasks, including transporting troops, ammunition and supplies. Let’s take a closer look at these two legendary vehicles.
The Jeep: small, agile and light
The Jeep is perhaps one of the most emblematic cars of the Second World War. Highly appreciated, it was a versatile vehicle that could travel over difficult terrain and carry soldiers, equipment or serve as a reconnaissance vehicle. Its compact design, four-wheel drive and ability to adapt to a variety of situations made it an invaluable tool for the US Army and its allies. Its crucial role during the Battle of Normandy was due to the fact that it was light, maneuverable and relatively easy to maintain.

Some technical information
Conception
In 1940, the U.S. Army expressed the need for a light, versatile, all-terrain military vehicle. Several manufacturers, including Willys-Overland and Ford, responded by developing prototypes. The Willys model was chosen for its robustness and performance, and gave its name to the famous Willys MB Jeep.
Technical data*
The Jeep Willys MB is a gasoline-powered vehicle with an in-line 4-cylinder engine and 60 hp. Its four-wheel drive and lightweight sheet-steel body make it a fast all-terrain vehicle. Weight is around 1.5 tons, depending on model and equipment. Fuel consumption is around 12/15 liters per 100km. It can carry up to three passengers in addition to the driver.
* These data are averages for all models.
What to remember
The Jeep was incredibly versatile. Its maneuverability and off-road capabilities made it an invaluable asset to the army during the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944, but also during the Battle of the Hedges, thanks to its ability to navigate difficult terrain and adapt to any situation.
The jeep after the war
After the war, its popularity continued, and the Jeep’s design evolved to become the basis of the civilian off-roader we know today. In Normandy, in June, many collectors bring out their military vehicles to parade at historical re-enactments. If you come to the region at this time of year, along the D-Day beaches, in the lands that saw the Battle of Normandy unfold, you’ll come across many of them, and of all types. You’re also likely to come across another mythical vehicle: the Dodge.
The Dodge: a military vehicle at the service of logistics
Appreciated for its robustness and well-suited to logistics operations, the DODGE was widely used during the Normandy landings. Thanks to their robust mechanics and sturdy chassis, many of them have survived the decades in working order.

Some technical information
Conception
The Dodge WC (Weapons carrier) was produced by the American brand DODGE from 1941 onwards. Numerous models of the WC range were produced during the Second World War (around ten), each with a different purpose: ambulances, command vehicles, ammunition transport, troop transport, with or without winch…
Technical data*
Most Dodge WC vehicles are equipped with in-line six-cylinder petrol engines, delivering around 92hp. The transmission and four-wheel drive system ensure excellent maneuverability, even in difficult terrain. Weight is around 2.5 tonnes, depending on the model, and fuel consumption is unfortunately very high (on average 24 litres/100km, rising to 30l/100). Depending on the model, the Dodge can carry up to 10 people.

What to remember
The Dodge WC, like the Jeep, was used extensively during the Second World War and the Normandy landings in 1944. It was in logistical operations that it became invaluable. Capable of transporting heavy loads and men over difficult terrain, it was a natural choice for medical transport and the resupply of supplies and ammunition.
The Dodge WC after the war
The Dodge WC did not evolve naturally into a civilian model, as was the case with the Jeep, but these design principles influenced the development of other vehicles. Nevertheless, the ruggedly built Dodge WC continued to be used by armed forces around the world for logistics, troop transport and supply missions.
Appreciated for their high load-bearing capacity, many Dodge vehicles, restored, maintained, modified or not, can still be found in today’s civilian life. They are used as ambulances, rescue vehicles, utility vehicles, goods vehicles, fire trucks and forestry vehicles…
Of course, many collectors and enthusiasts of military vehicles own this emblematic vehicle, whose robustness has seen it through the decades. You’ll find them at parades, commemorative events, historical re-enactments and museums.
As part of our temporary exhibition “La guerre c’est pas du cinéma” (“War is not cinema”) at the museum in 2023/24, we couldn’t resist showing you this image from the film “La horse” starring Jean Gabin, featuring a DODGE WC 51.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the Jeep and the Dodge were two military vehicles used extensively during the Second World War, each with its own role in the theater of operations. The Jeep was lightweight and versatile, while the Dodge was robust and roomy. Both were capable of operating in difficult terrain, thanks to their wheel drive.
