Exceptional Acquisition of 1944 registers with Photos from Utah and Omaha

On November 2, 2021, the NORMANDY VICTORY MUSEUM acquired a set of documents of exceptional historical interest: three books of coastal photographs of the Utah and Omaha sectors, from Grandcamp-Maisy. These hardback registers, with a green cloth cover, were produced by the GSGS, Geographical Section, General Staff. The booklets were prepared by the ISTD (Inter Services Topographical Department) in February 1944, based on photographic surveys of the Normandy coastline between the mouth of the Seine and Cap de la Hague.
All the photos taken have been collected in 16 different books. The NORMANDY VICTORY MUSEUM now has three of them,
- The “Booklet M“, going from the beach of the Madeleine, on Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, to the Hameau du Nord at Gougins.
- The “Booklet N” continues north to Morsalines.
- Finally, the third booklet of photos is coded “F” and goes from Port-en-Bessin to Saint-Laurent-sur-mer.
These rare documents allow us to discover what the Allies knew about the two key sectors of June 6, 1944, Utah Beach and Omaha Beach. They will soon be presented in a new staging of the museum.
